I've realized a great number of people manifest their true personality online, although a lot of people know this, its quite interesting to study.

Why is that? are people just faking what they are and what they want to say to other people in real life in fear of getting a negative reaction in return?

I'm not saying everyone does this on the internet, but a lot do, whether its because they find amusement out of it or just to piss people off.

I think this tells a lot about people, if they are only acting this way because they have the safety of a computer then deep inside thats what they truly are in real life, and they just hide it. Personally I behave the same way I do in real life, although I might express myself a little more freely I still stand behind the way I act in reality. People might think there is a difference between the two, but I differ, as long as the human element is there the outcome will be the same. This is why a lot of people have been pushed to commit suicide while having a web cam session for other users among other unfortunate events.

Considering I'm active in a lot of online forums and communities this is no surprise to me, but I think its an interesting topic to study, particularly in this day and age where more people are utilizing the internet as a way of self expression and social network.

Leave your thoughts on the topic if you have any.

yea this does in fact mean somethin to me, mainly because i do it..... i am normally quiet in real life, kind of anti-social, but when im online i kinda dont really see the rejection as much.... in Reality i have a low self esteem and dont really think anyone would WANT to talk to me , so i talk online because there it seems like they have nothing to do.......

Im horrible X(

IF anything i'd almost say that the majority of people online are more fake or put on a much different "front" then in real life. They can say, do, or be anyone they want...and i guess you can say that maybe it is their true personality that comes out.

I'm a large Forum lurker, but really only for 1 reason, because most people who post a lot on forums think they know it all or are just complete ass hats when you try to correct them. So i tend to be shyer online then i am in real life...go figure.

I guess it can be a good thing or a bad thing. Such as for Blinding above me, it helps them be less stressed about people rejecting them. Where as others find it to be a place to put others down.

I didn't post this to offend anybody and I hope I didn't offend you. It is just my personal view on the whole thing.

I understand if some people utilize the internet as a better way of communication than on real life, after all, you can remain anonymous if you want to. However what I meant was that some people, act improperly on the internet, being mean or hateful against others while on real life they just put a nice face and a smile.

Its interesting to see this duel personality thing on real life and on the internet, I guess some people show their better qualities on the internet because their afraid or shy on reality. It speaks of what kind of world we live in, in one where some people like to distance themselves from reality because lets face it, its pretty horrible and I guess that tells us that we need to change it.

I think I reveal my own self better on the internet than I do in real life, but that doesn't mean I have to act like a jackass to other people, which is the point Im trying to make across.

Some people do need to be put in their place, but some others are cornered and by peer pressure from reality and the internet are forced to behave improper towards others.

Maybe this just tells us more about the human psyche, that in a lot of ways we don't want to let people know who we are in fear of being rejected, but at the same time we try to show ourselves in hope of being understood.

No you didnt offend, i understand completely, i see this everyday, people cowering behind the screen to make themselves feel better, i mean i do what i do, but a few other people i know scream and cuss about whatever they want on the net, while being the "Quiet good kid"... Especially on the xbox forums, :P

Well thanks for responding, i just thought that was something interesting to think about at the time.

In all i think that's all that the internet really is. One big social experiment. A place where anyone can be anybody at any time.
